Advocate
What does it mean to advocate?
Advocacy means different things to different people. For some, advocating means talking to others about the important issues facing our community. For others, advocacy takes place through writing a letter to the editor or getting in touch with an elected official to voice concern or support.
Each and every one of us has the power to make our voices heard. Champion a cause. Reach out. Speak up. Anyone can become an advocate for community change.
United Way of the Piedmont has chosen to highlight three areas in which to focus advocacy efforts:
Because advocacy carries many different meanings, there are many ways you can become a United Way advocate:
- Talk to your friends and family about issues that are important to you. When you make others aware of the issues facing our community, you become a part of the solution!
- Become educated about the issues. Learn more about your community by visiting the Spartanburg Community Indicators website. Invite a speaker to your workplace to share his or her United Way story, or take a tour of an agency that serves people in need.
- Write a letter to the editor on an issue affecting our community that you feel passionately about.
- Cast a ballot and build a relationship with your elected officials. For information on voting in South Carolina, visit the South Carolina State Election Commission's Website.
