History
In 1936, the Spartanburg United Campaign called upon Spartanburg to raise $41,805 to fund eight agencies. Those eight agencies represented a myriad of services, from soup lines to housing. Some of those original eight agencies are still serving the community, but the scope of the programs and number of people touched has flourished.Years of booming textile industries helped fund health and human organizations
until automotive, medical, and other manufacturers replaced the majority of textile
companies, thereby increasing the diversity of the community. The current name,
United Way of the Piedmont, became official in 1985.
Years of growth in the surrounding community led to Union County being included
within our funding area in 2002.
In September 2007, at the behest of United Way of America, our board voted to
include Cherokee County in our service area.
