MLK Day of Service

Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. Visit MLKDay.gov.

Join MLK Day and make a differnce!

January 16th, 2012 beginning at 8 am.

Join volunteers from around the community for an event that will strengthen our community and commemorate the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Approximately 400 volunteers are needed to serve as volunteers at sites across the area. Projects include food drives, writing letters to service personnel overseas, painting and construction, and much more.

“Dr. King’s life of service continues to inspire us more than 40 years after his death,” said Julia Lyons, RSVP Director. “There is no more fitting way to honor Dr. King’s memory than by serving others, particularly those most in need. As Dr. King himself said, 'Life’s most urgent and persistent question is: what are you doing for others?'” To make this holiday a “day on” instead of a “day off,” you can give back to your community by participating in this  event. Festivities, including a speaker and breakfast, begin at 8 a.m.  on January 16th at the Ben Johnson Arena at Wofford College. From there, volunteers will travel to heir sites, and volunteers are encouraged to coordinate transportation with friends new and old. Register at http://wofford.edu/MLK.

A team of service organizations including United Way’s Retired Senior and Volunteer Program (RSVP), City of Spartanburg, Spartanburg School District 7 AmeriCorps, Piedmont Area AmeriCorps*VISTA, Converse College and Wofford College planned the day of service.  The effort will leverage the strength of local citizens to impact pressing community concerns.  This event is part of the national MLK Day of Service, led by the Corporation for National and Community Service in collaboration with the King Center, and involving a broad MLK Day Service Network.
