United Way of the
Piedmont
hosted a special grants ceremony in December to award local non-profits almost
$100,000 in special capacity building grants. The ceremony took place at Milliken
Research Center’s Theater with agencies, community leaders and board members on
hand.
Additional funds were available due to both a record-breaking 2006-2007 campaign
year and
United Way's continuous efforts with efficient administration. Jim Thomas, last
year's campaign chair and member of the management team, was very pleased the
surplus was designated back into the community. “Once all the numbers were
in and the board identified the surplus, there was never any question whether
or not it should be put back into the community. That’s where the donors would
want their dollars invested and that’s where they can do the most good,” stated Thomas.
The funding is intended for one-time, special projects or capacity building initiatives
that will enhance a non-profit organization’s ability to provide services to the
community and their constituents. Typically funds received from United Way are allocated for programs that directly benefit the recipient, but these capacity
building grants will allow the agency to use the funds in a variety of ways, including
technical and facility upgrades, capital expenditures and continuing education
for staff.
Almost $250,000 was requested from the agencies in the form of 33 proposals.
Janis Emplit, Senior Vice President for Denny’s and chairperson of United Way’s
Community Impact Committee, said that the selection process was difficult, but
that the committee is continually impressed with how resourceful the agencies
are and is confident these grants will positively impact each organization’s ability
to improve our community.
