When you give to the United Way of the Piedmont, your contribution helps create
success stories for people who need a helping hand. These are examples of recent
success stories about real people:
Martha & Sam's Story
For five years I was married to a man who abused me and hurt my child, Sam, also.
I had to leave the relationship.
At first, SAFE Homes-Rape Crisis Coalition provided me with an affordable place
to bring Sam for therapy. His therapist helped him to get rid of his anger and
aggression and turn him into a sweet, caring child who feels strong and powerful.
The therapist also encouraged me to come and she guided me through some very emotional
and painful times. Because of her insight and kindness, she helped me to get
my life back, all of it.
I will never forget what SAFE Homes-Rape Crisis Coalition has done for me. I
am now in law school on a scholarship, and my future has been shaped by my experiences,
good and bad. The bad times will help to make me a strong, persistent advocate
for victims, and through the support and services of SAFE Homes-Rape Crisis Coalition,
I have the power and self-confidence to carry through and reach my goals.
Thank you for everything.
Griselda's Story
Griselda lives in a home where Spanish is the only language spoken. Griselda
was having trouble keeping up with the other students in her second grade class
at Arcadia Elementary School. Her teacher, Ms. Baker, arranged for her to attend
a Boys and Girls Club Smart Center.
After only five months, Griselda began to complete her homework, participate
in class, and made friends among her classmates. In the encouraging environment
of her Smart Center, her progress is proof that just one hour per day four days
a week can create success in a child's life.
