Volunteer Tax Assistance

Helping hard working citizens keep their money!

Did you know that over $3 million in eligible tax return money goes unclaimed each year in the Spartanburg community?!?

Many in our community don’t have access to affordable tax preparation services or are unaware of programs like Earned Income Tax Credits that could put literally thousands of dollars back in their hands and into our local economy.

Each year, United Way partners with the Upstate Workforce Investment Board, the IRS, and other local organizations to provide free income tax preparation for low-moderate income families and seniors in our community. Community volunteers go through a training program and use online tax software provided by the IRS to prepare these returns.

Since its inception in 2004, Spartanburg County VITA has prepared over 6,000 tax returns and brought back over 6 million in refunds and credits to individuals in our community.

In 2012, we will have volunteer tax preparation sites in operation from early February through the end of tax season. All tax preparation is done by appointment only. Call 582-2975 to schedule a tax appointment.

Sites include (but are not limited to):
Middle Tyger Community Center -  84 Groce Road, Lyman, SC  29365
New Day Clubhouse - 1530 Asheville Highway, Spartanburg, SC 29304
Wofford College Olin Building - 429 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303
