The Walter S. Montgomery, Sr. Young Leader Award was presented to Kenneth Smith
at the October Leadership reception. This award, instituted in 2005, honors a
young leader of the community who exhibits uncommon generosity, involvement and
leadership in serving human service organizations and initiatives.
Smith, a decorated, eight year veteran of the United States Navy, is the pastor of
Mount
Calvary
Baptist
Church
in White Stone. He serves as president of Focus on Leadership, a local nonprofit,
devoted to promoting and developing leadership skills among African Americans.
Also president of the PTO at Park Hills Elementary School, Smith coordinates
an after-school leadership program for 5
th & 6
th grade boys called Lodestone Urban Leadership Academy. 24 young men participated
in the program last year, and it is expanding to Cleveland Elementary this year
and to serve an additional 17 young men.
Smith is also chairman of the Spartanburg Charter School Executive Planning Committee
and is a member of City Council for District 5.
