United Way of the Piedmont announced our honorees for this year’s National Philanthropy Day Awards.
National Philanthropy Day® (NPD) is celebrated by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and hundreds of nonprofit and for-profit organizations throughout North America. This year, NPD was November 15th and on this special day, AFP recognizes the great philanthropic contributions to the community of philanthropy and those active volunteers who devote their time to advance the efforts of various organizations.
The local chapter of AFP, the Piedmont Chapter, held a special luncheon in Greenville to honor this year’s award winners. As part of the event, United Way of the Piedmont was proud to recognize the following:
● AFL as the Corporate Philanthropist of the Year
AFL has been a champion of United Way of the Piedmont, and continues to demonstrate their commitment to the community through corporate engagement, employee giving and community service opportunities. In their most recent United Way campaign, AFL raised over $287,000, representing an 11% growth in giving with the number of associates who gave increasing by 9%.
● Walter and Betty Montgomery as the Individual/Family Philanthropist of the Year
Betty and Walter, longtime residents of Spartanburg, have graciously extended their knowledge, time, and resources to the community for many years. Throughout their lifetime, they have served in leadership capacities on numerous boards, commissions, and task forces that have tremendous impact on our shared community. For all who know them, Betty and Walter exemplify true servant leaders.
● Ricky Richardson as the Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year
Ricky Richardson has spearheaded United Way of the Piedmont’s newest committee, the New Opportunities Committee, connecting corporate partners and local companies to United Way’s work. Ricky demonstrates remarkable passion for his community when he speaks to corporate leaders about the importance of their philanthropy.
● Geordy Johnson as the Young Philanthropist of the year
Geordy Johnson is CEO of Johnson Development Associates. Johnson is a former member of United Way of the Piedmont’s Board of Directors and one of the founding members of Young Leaders. Through his leadership, Johnson Development has become a key corporate partner in giving and volunteerism.
About National Philanthropy Day®
National Philanthropy Day® (NPD) is the special day set aside to recognize and pay tribute to the great contributions that philanthropy – and those people active in the philanthropic community – have made to our lives, our communities and our world.
When NPD was first celebrated in 1986, then-President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation officially recognizing Nov. 15, 1986, as National Philanthropy Day®. Since then, the day has been recognized by numerous state, provincial and local governments across North America.
