An exciting partnership between Walmart Inc. and United Way of the Piedmont (UWP) has led to the establishment of our unique Gifts-in-Kind Center (GIKC) here in Spartanburg. In 2009, Walmart opened a reverse logistics distribution center in Spartanburg (on North Blackstock Road), which processes returned, damaged, and unsold merchandise from its retail outlets in the southeastern US. At this center, products are dispositioned to be restocked, scrapped, sold to liquidators, or donated to charity. Many of the items donated to charity are shipped to our GIKC, where they are “shopped” by member agencies, who then distribute the products to their clients helping them fulfill their missions and save money. In 2019, and now celebrating our 10th anniversary, this fantastic service center—annually providing products worth over $25 million—is operated by our committed staff and volunteers, and shopping rights are provided to our member agencies at very low cost.
