Spartanburg, S.C. (November 18, 2020) – United Way of the Piedmont, in partnership with the City of Spartanburg, is excited to announce the opening of its Financial Opportunity Center (FOC). The FOC is a one-stop-shop for community members to access critical financial stability services.
Almost 1 in 3 individuals in Spartanburg are struggling or unable to afford basic needs including food, housing, clothing, transportation, health care, and childcare. Over 70% of these individuals are likely employed but do not have the income to cover their expenses and do not qualify for assistance.
Lack of access to services is a significant barrier to individuals seeking to overcome financial instability. The FOC will provide a variety of services and resources in one easy-to-access location.
The addition of the Financial Opportunity Center will help United Way achieve its financial stability Bold Goal for the next ten years: decreasing the number of individuals below self-sufficiency by 11,000. With greater access to services through the FOC, United Way hopes that individuals will be further empowered on their paths to self-sufficiency.
“United Way is the leader in financial stability in Spartanburg County, and we fight for the stability of every member of our community,” commented Paige Stephenson, President and CEO of United Way of the Piedmont. “As part of our Bold Goals, the Financial Opportunity Center will play a crucial role in giving the community access to financial stability services.”
Located in the previous Northwest Community Center, the FOC neighbors the Spartanburg Opportunity Center (SOC), which serves clients experiencing or at risk of homelessness. By sharing space, the FOC and SOC will be able to work as close partners to provide services to the Spartanburg community.
“Spartanburg is a special place and we are fortunate to collaborate with so many partners to make [the center] available,” said Mitch Kennedy, Assistant City Manager for the City of Spartanburg.
Among the FOC’s services are intensive case management from United Way’s Community Resource Coordinators along with financial literacy services and assistance applying for benefits. Also provided through the center will be United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which offers free tax preparation assistance, and space for community partners to provide trainings, workshops, and services for community members to increase their financial stability.
The FOC is located at 701 Saxon Avenue, Spartanburg, SC 29301 and will initially be open by appointment only. To make an appointment with a Community Resource Coordinator at the FOC, you can call United Way at 864-582-7556.
