United Since 1936: Celebrating 90 Years
The Foundation
On November 15, 1936, a group of community members and local agencies gathered in Spartanburg with a shared question: What if we started working together to meet local needs?
Out of that gathering, the United Campaign in Spartanburg was born, which was a collective effort to fill gaps in services and raise funds for the good of all.

By 1937, that spark had grown into something bold: "The Drive to End All Drives." The campaign ignited a movement that would grow into what we know as Community Chest, United Fund, and ultimately, United Way.
Ninety years later, that founding spirit still lives in everything we do. We still bring local nonprofits, businesses, and community members around a shared table to listen, respond, and tackle the toughest challenges together.
The Future
Guided by our vision of a united community where everyone thrives, we're stepping into the future with hope, clarity, and deep resolve.
Across all three counties, we continue to mobilize people, partners, and resources. We are a leader, convener, implementer, and funder–our roles shifting based on where we can do the most good.
Our 2026 Strategic Plan sharpens our focus on three priorities that reflect both our legacy and our responsibility to what comes next:
- Financial Security for Every Household: driving economic mobility and stability through data-driven investments and programs that open doors for individuals and families.
- Powering Collective Strength: strengthening nonprofits, reducing duplication. and aligning systems, so our community’s resources go further.
- Presence with Purpose: showing up intentionally and equitably in every county we serve.
This unified approach honors our 90-year legacy of trust. We look back with pride and move forward with intentional purpose. View our 2026 Strategic Plan.
We can't wait to bring you along on this journey. Throughout our 90th anniversary year, we'll be sharing stories from our past, celebrating the people who made us who we are, and building together toward a future that's brighter for everyone in our region. Thanks for being here with us.
